  • Dallas-based Dean Foods reported revenues of $2.48 billion for second-quarter with WhiteWave Foods, a subsidiary of Dean Foods, reporting sales up 7 percent to $307 million. Shares of Dean Foods edged up, as analyst noted the strong showing of the company’s WhiteWave division. In June 2006 Broomfield-based WhiteWave Foods Company through employee donations, and a vendor and corporate matching program donated more than $28,000, coming in first place in overall donations in the annual Community Food Share Corporate Challenge. In August 2006, WhiteWave Foods and Mothering magazine each received National Breast Feeding at Work Week Rumina Awards for exemplary support of nursing mothers in the workplace.
  • Broomfield-based Gaiam Inc., a health and lifestyle firm, reported sales generated by a recent acquisition of media titles from Good Times Entertainment bolstered second-quarter revenues and widened net losses to $1.2 million, or 5 cents per share on revenue of $43.2 million. Gaiam joined The Russell 3000 Index in June 2006.
  • Aurora Organic Dairy of Boulder announced in August 2006 it is providing $1,000 tuition scholarships for every student participating in the inaugural organic agriculture program at Colorado State University in Fort Collins. Students will continue to participate in on-farm internships at Aurora Organic Dairy’s Platteville farm and soon at the new High Plains Organic Dairy near Kersey, CO.
  • Hain-Celestial Group Inc. acquired in June 2006 the Linda McCartney brand frozen meat-free business from food producer H.J. Heinz Co. Terms of the deal, which included a manufacturing plant in Fakenham, England, were not disclosed.
  • Pangea Organics of Boulder, maker of “ecocentric body care” products, was noted for green operations due to its wage and benefits structure in a June 2006 Business Week cover story. According to the article, Pangea Organics had sales of $3 million in 2005. In August 2006, Pangea Organics announced its full line of products will be placed in all Colorado Whole Food Market and Wild Oats Market stores. Pangea is placed in over 380 retail locations throughout the U.S. and is in seven countries.
  • Boulder-based Teko, an organic sock manufacturer, announced in July 2006 it has joined Chicago Climate Exchange, the only North American and world’s first greenhouse gas emission registry, reduction and trading system for all six greenhouse gases.   • Boulder Ice Cream announced this past summer that it is participating in a Zero Waste program run by Eco-Cycle, successfully diverting 70 percent of their waste from landfills and expects to reach 90 percent by year-end. They now use corn-based serving cups and spoons at local festivals and events.

  • Shares of Martek Biosciences Corp. stock rose after the company announced it signed a deal in June 2006 to supply General Mills Inc. with an omega-3 fatty acid. The company’s second quarter profits increased 84 percent over the same period a year ago, benefiting from a surge in international infant formula sales and an increase in contract manufacturing. Martek employs 26 in Boulder.
  • Niwot-based Haystack Mountain Goat Dairy closed in August 2006 on a 32-acre land purchase deal for $650,000 from Boulder County Parks and Open Space. Under the agreement, Haystack owner Jim Schott will be able to lease an additional 48 acres of open space for the dairy.
  • Boulder-based Econergy ensured the carbon offsets of Shaklee’s 50th Anniversary Conference, making it a climate neutral event. Shaklee, based in San Francisco, is a network marketer of nutritional supplements. Visit www.econergy.com.
