Success Story: The Organic Dish How did The Organic Dish come about?Toby and I had been using regular (non-organic, non-local) meal preparation services and loved the convenience but had been dissatisfied with the lack of quality fresh ingredients and healthy recipes and no vegetarian options. After a health concern in early 2005, we had a diet overhaul, went on a cleanse, and ended up eliminating certain things from our diets (refined sugar, processed foods, caffeine) and went nearly completely organic. Because we were so impressed with how we felt and still feel, we decided to open The Organic Dish to share our love of good, healthy, organic food. Tell us more about The Organic DishThe Organic Dish is a make your own meal service. Basically, we sell organic “dinner kits” in sizes that feed 2-3 people or 5-6 people. The meals are frozen and are defrosted and then cooked in 10-15 minutes at home. Your house smells great from home-cooking, but planning what to eat, grocery shopping, prep time and clean up are all minimized. The menu changes monthly and we have ~12 choices per month (with 4-6 vegetarian options). People normally come once per month and buy 6-12 meals to put in their home freezer. You can get our meals at the Boulder Farmer’s Market, or order online for pick-up, delivery, or come to a “session” where you put together the meals yourself based on the recipes from the month and all the ingredients being prepped and ready to be put together. We are members of PACE (Partners for a Clean Environment), Mission Organic 2010, Colorado Proud, and working towards zero waste through Eco-Cycle by composting and recycling. We also work with local farms and producers such as Wisdom Chicken (Haxtun, CO), Pasta Bozza (Boulder, CO), Justin’s Nut Butters (Boulder, CO), Red Wagon Farms (Boulder, CO), Oxford Gardens (Boulder, CO) and Full Circle Farms (Longmont, CO). What does the future look like for The Organic Dish?Currently, we are in a temporary kitchen. Our next goal is to move to our own kitchen. At that point, we will have more space available to expand our monthly menu as well as to include vegetable sides and experiment with having fresh and not just frozen dinner kits. In the future, we will also work towards expanding our relationships with local farms and businesses. We currently work with people who have special dietary concerns (allergies such as gluten, dairy, sugar, etc), but will also work towards increasing our awareness and having alternative foods for certain diets. Who goes for The Organic Dish? Our customers come from diverse backgrounds: busy professionals with no children, single parents, families, folks with specific dietary concerns, new mothers, senior citizens, and people that are facing a major health crisis and need to eat healthy, delicious, organic meals as part of their recovery.
